We Need a Final Answer on Court Funding

October 15, 2009

In a letter to the Philadelphia Inquirer, PMC weighs in on the ongoing litigation regarding the funding of the Unified Judicial System.  Written in response to an Inquirer editorial on the litigation, PMC noted: "But the Unified Judicial System does not operate as a unified system. Only a fraction of the operational costs are paid by the state; the bulk of the cost of operating our courts falls on the individual counties. This is despite a long-standing order of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ordering the state legislature to fund the Unified Judicial System."

To paraphrase the hosts of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, PMC believes we need a final answer to this question: How will the Pennsylvania courts be funded. Whether this is resolved through litigation, negotiation, or some more innovative cooperation among the legislature and the court system, we must have some finality. The people of Pennsylvania deserve to know how our courthouse doors will be kept open.
