An analysis of the Luzerne County Drug Treatment Court, in place since early 2006, shows the program is saving money and having high rates of success in keeping participants out of the court system and on the right track. The Times Leader reports in an editorial that the program which cost just over $300,000 has saved approximately $1.72 million for the county. In addition, "[t]he specialty court not only succeeded when measured in dollars-and-cents terms but also in social ones. The people picked to go through the program showed tremendous resolve at sticking to the plan, seeking better lives through further schooling and staying sober."
Pennsylvania has been expanding the use of such speciality or problem solving courts in order to achieve such results. For more information about problem solving courts, visit our Minor Courts page.
