New Merit Selection Legislation Introduced in PA

Bills have been  introduced into the both houses of the state legislature to amend the state constitution to implement a merit selection system for Pennsylvanian's appellate courts. Senators Jane Earll and Daylin Leach and Representatives Matthew Smith and Will Gabig are the prime sponors of the legislation. Governor Rendell also supports the legislation. 

Court Vacancies

In addition to the six appellate court vacancies for which primary elections were held in May 2009, two new vacancies will be created because of two additional departures from the bench.  Judge Maureen Lally-Green of the Superior Court and Judge Doris Smith-Ribner of the Commonwealth Court have announced they will be leaving the bench.
